The basis is: مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَهُ سِتًّا مِنْ شَوَّالٍ كَانَ كَصِيَامِ الدَّهْرِ "Whoever fasts Ramadan and then follows it with six days of fasting in the month of Shawwal, then it is as if he fasted a whole year." (Muslim HR) Said al imam Ibn Mubarak: "This is a good practice to do, as well as fasting three days every month." [1] 2. What is the law? Based on the hadith above, the majority of scholars are of the opinion that fasting Shawwal is sunnah, while the Malikiyyah school of thought is of the view that fasting Shawwal is makruh.[2] 3.
