RICH OR POOR? By: Ahmad Syahrin Thoriq There are so many hadiths that mention the virtues of poor people. But that doesn't mean the Prophet ﷺ told his people to live in poverty. Who wants to be poor anyway? What he ﷺ wants with his words in this chapter is for his people who live in poverty to behave qanaah and be able to be patient in living it. Likewise, there are many hadiths that mention fadhilah about rich people. But that is not the meaning of the Prophet ﷺ motivating his people to be rich. Because we are not even told to, it is human nature to want to live a rich life. What he wanted with his words in this matter was for his rich people to be generous and clever at being grateful. Thinking that this religion orders its followers to become rich or conversely tells the poor to languish with nothing is a form of misunderstanding and serious misunderstanding.
