IS IT OK TO PRAY FOR NON-MUSLIM? By: Ahmad Syahrin Thoriq Whether or not prayer is permissible depends on the content and purpose of the prayer. The prayer that is forbidden for unbelievers is a prayer asking forgiveness for them if they have died in their disbelief. This is agreed upon by the scholars without difference of opinion,¹ based on the content of the verse in surah At Taubah verse 113: مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُوا لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَلَوْ كَانُوا أ ُولِي قُرْبَى مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْجَحِيمِ "And it is not appropriate for the Prophet and believers to ask forgiveness (of Allah) for the polytheists, even if they are those people who are his relatives, after it is clear to them that the polytheists are residents of hell."
