Obama Criticizes Elon Musk: It's Better to Protect Earth Than Mars

- Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos through their respective companies, SpaceX and Blue Origin, have the ambition to build colonies in outer space, including the planet Mars. However, the effort was criticized by the former president of the United States, Barack Obama.
According to him, Earth will be more habitable than the planet Mars, even after nuclear war. Obama argued that the tycoons in Silicon Valley should focus more on saving the Earth than investing in flying humans into space.
"When I hear some people talk about plans to colonize Mars because Earth's environment may be so degraded as to be uninhabitable, I look at them and wonder, what are you talking about?" Obama said at the opening of the POwR.Earth 2024 Summit in Paris.

"Even after a nuclear war, Earth will be more habitable than Mars, even if we don't do anything about climate change, Earth will still have oxygen. As far as we know, Mars doesn't have it," he added.
Obama emphasized that the development of space exploration must continue for the sake of science and discovery. But when it comes to relocating humans to space, "I'd rather we invest in keeping the planet here," Obama said.
"We were designed for this place, and it would be better if we kept this place livable," he said, as quoted by detikINET from Insider.
Elon Musk has said he wants to send millions of humans to Mars by 2050 and according to him it is very likely that humans will land on the red planet in the next decade.
Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin company plans to test its own mega-rocket, New Glenn, for the first time in August this year. The rocket could compete with SpaceX's Starship for NASA's plans to return to the moon before heading to Mars.
The former Amazon CEO said last year that he saw more potential in putting humans on giant space stations than sending them to other planets.

- Elon Musk dan Jeff Bezos melalui perusahaan masing-masing, SpaceX dan Blue Origin, berambisi membangun koloni di luar angkasa, termasuk ke Planet Mars. Akan tetapi, upaya itu dikritik oleh mantan presiden Amerika Serikat, Barack Obama.
Menurutnya, Bumi akan lebih layak huni dibandingkan planet Mars, bahkan setelah perang nuklir. Obama berpendapat bahwa para taipan di Silicon Valley, seharusnya lebih fokus pada penyelamatan Bumi daripada berinvestasi menerbangkan manusia ke antariksa.
"Ketika saya mendengar beberapa orang berbicara tentang rencana untuk menjajah Mars karena lingkungan Bumi mungkin sudah sangat terdegradasi sehingga tidak dapat ditinggali, saya melihat mereka dan bertanya-tanya, apa yang Anda bicarakan?" kata Obama pada pembukaan KTT POwR.Earth 2024 di Paris.

"Bahkan setelah perang nuklir, Bumi akan lebih layak huni dibandingkan Mars, bahkan jika kita tidak melakukan apa pun terhadap perubahan iklim, Bumi masih memiliki oksigen. Sejauh yang kami tahu, Mars tidak memilikinya," imbuhnya.
Obama menegaskan, pengembangan eksplorasi luar angkasa harus terus berlanjut demi ilmu pengetahuan dan penemuan. Namun beda halnya ketika menyangkut relokasi manusia ke luar angkasa, "Saya lebih suka kita berinvestasi dalam menjaga planet ini di sini," kata Obama.
"Kita dirancang untuk tempat ini, dan akan lebih baik jika kita menjaga tempat ini agar tetap layak huni," cetusnya, seperti dikutip detikINET dari Insider.
Elon Musk pernah mengatakan ingin mengirim jutaan manusia ke Mars pada tahun 2050 dan menurutnya sangat mungkin manusia akan mendarat di planet merah tersebut dalam dekade berikutnya.
Sedangkan perusahaan Blue Origin milik Jeff Bezos berencana menguji mega-roketnya sendiri, New Glenn, untuk pertama kalinya pada Agustus tahun ini. Roket tersebut dapat bersaing dengan Starship dari SpaceX untuk rencana NASA untuk kembali ke bulan sebelum menuju ke Mars.
Mantan CEO Amazon itu mengatakan tahun lalu bahwa dia melihat lebih banyak potensi dalam menempatkan manusia di stasiun luar angkasa raksasa daripada mengirim mereka ke planet lain.
