Google Staff Steals AI Secrets, Sells to Chinese Startup
-- Google is suing employees who allegedly stole the company's artificial intelligence (AI) technology secrets, then sold them to a Chinese startup.
The employee, named Linwei Ding or Leon Ding, was charged with stealing AI trade secrets from the technology giant and secretly collaborating with two AI industrial companies based in China.
Ding was charged with four counts of theft of trade secrets. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison for each charge.
"The Department of Justice will not tolerate the theft of artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies that could harm our national security," said Attorney General Merrick Garland in a statement, Wednesday (6/4), citing CNN.
Merrick added that his party would firmly protect sensitive technology developed in the United States (US) so that it does not fall into the hands of parties who should not have it.
Ding, a 38-year-old Chinese national living in California, is accused of copying more than 500 files containing confidential information from Google into his personal account over a period of one year starting in 2022. Prosecutors said these files included technology involved in the building blocks of Google's advanced supercomputer data centers.
Ding currently does not have a lawyer to face the lawsuit.
As part of his responsibilities at Google, prosecutors said, Ding helped develop software used in Google's supercomputer data centers. The job gave Ding access to Google's hardware infrastructure, software platforms, and the AI models and applications they support.
The Justice Department said months after Ding allegedly started copying Google files, he was offered a position as chief technology officer for an “early-stage technology company” based in China.
Ding allegedly went to China for several months, where he participated in investor meetings to raise money for the company. Potential investors in the company were told that Ding was an executive and owned 20 percent of the company.
Prosecutors said Ding took steps to hide his work while in China, including having other employees use his badge to access his office to make it appear he was in the US.
In the following year, Ding founded his own technology company in the field of "AI and machine learning industry."
The company allegedly applied to a China-based startup program and claimed it had experience with Google's ten thousand card computing power platform. They also said they only need to replicate and improve it, to then further develop a computing power platform that suits China's national conditions.
In a statement, Google said it had conducted a thorough investigation into Ding's alleged misconduct and quickly referred the case to the FBI.
Google spokesman José Castañeda said Ding was a junior employee, and the company monitored file transfers to cloud storage platforms including Google Drive and Dropbox.
"We have stringent safeguards in place to prevent theft of our confidential commercial information and trade secrets," Castañeda said.
"After an investigation, we discovered that this employee stole numerous documents, and we immediately turned the case over to law enforcement. We are grateful to the FBI for helping protect our information and will continue to work closely with them," he added.

Karyawan bernama Linwei Ding atau Leon Ding, didakwa mencuri rahasia dagang AI dari raksasa teknologi tersebut dan secara diam-diam bekerja sama dengan dua perusahaan industri AI yang berbasis di China.
Ding didakwa dengan empat dakwaan pencurian rahasia dagang. Jika terbukti bersalah, ia terancam hukuman hingga 10 tahun penjara untuk setiap tuduhan.
"Departemen Kehakiman tidak akan mentolerir pencurian kecerdasan buatan dan teknologi canggih lainnya yang dapat membahayakan keamanan nasional kita," kata Jaksa Agung Merrick Garland dalam sebuah pernyataan, Rabu (6/4), mengutip CNN.
Merrick menambahkan pihaknya akan dengan tegas melindungi teknologi sensitif yang dikembangkan di Amerika Serikat (AS) agar tidak jatuh ke tangan pihak-pihak yang seharusnya tidak memilikinya.
Ding, seorang warga negara China berusia 38 tahun yang tinggal di California, dituduh menyalin lebih dari 500 file berisi informasi rahasia dari Google ke dalam akun pribadinya selama satu tahun sejak 2022. Jaksa penuntut menyebut file-file ini termasuk teknologi yang terlibat dalam blok bangunan pusat data superkomputer canggih Google.
Ding sampai saat ini belum memliki pengacara untuk menghadapi gugatan tersebut.
Sebagai bagian dari tanggung jawabnya di Google, kata jaksa penuntut, Ding membantu mengembangkan perangkat lunak yang digunakan di pusat data superkomputer Google. Pekerjaan itu membuat Ding memiliki akses ke infrastruktur perangkat keras Google, platform perangkat lunak, dan model serta aplikasi AI yang mereka dukung.
Departemen Kehakiman mengatakan beberapa bulan setelah Ding diduga mulai menyalin file Google, dia ditawari posisi sebagai chief technology officer untuk sebuah "perusahaan teknologi tahap awal" yang berbasis di China.
Ding diduga pergi ke China selama beberapa bulan, di mana ia berpartisipasi dalam pertemuan investor untuk mengumpulkan uang bagi perusahaan tersebut. Para calon investor perusahaan tersebut diberitahu bahwa Ding adalah seorang eksekutif dan memiliki 20 persen saham perusahaan.

Perusahaan tersebut diduga mendaftar ke program startup yang berbasis di China dan mengklaim mereka memiliki pengalaman dengan platform daya komputasi sepuluh ribu kartu Google. Mereka juga menyebut hanya perlu mereplikasi dan meningkatkannya, untuk kemudian mengembangkan lebih lanjut platform daya komputasi yang sesuai dengan kondisi nasional China.
Dalam sebuah pernyataan, Google mengatakan telah melakukan investigasi menyeluruh terhadap dugaan pelanggaran yang dilakukan Ding dan dengan cepat merujuk kasus ini ke FBI.
Juru bicara Google José Castañeda menyebut Ding adalah seorang karyawan junior, dan perusahaan memantau transfer file ke platform penyimpanan cloud termasuk Google Drive dan Dropbox.
"Kami memiliki perlindungan yang ketat untuk mencegah pencurian informasi komersial dan rahasia dagang rahasia kami," kata Castañeda.
