According to Business Insider, on Thursday (28/12), Google agreed to settle privacy claims in the form of a class-action lawsuit worth $5 billion. The lawsuit claims that Google wiretaps users who use the "incognito" mode on the Chrome browser to track their internet usage.
A lawsuit filed in 2020 stated that Google misled users. By making them believe that the company will not track their internet activities while using incognito mode.
The lawsuit argues that Google's advertising technology and third-party websites that use Google Analytics or Google Ad Manager continue to log details of users' visits and activity even when they use supposedly "private," browsing modes. It then sends the information back to Google's servers.
The plaintiffs also alleged that Google's activities generated "a trove of information" about users who thought they had taken steps to protect their privacy by using the browser "incognito."
Although Google has agreed to settle the lawsuit with a $5 billion settlement, approval from a federal judge is still needed.
However, details of the agreement were not disclosed, the lawsuit initially sought $5 billion to support users.
