Let's Find Ourselves in the Koran
Once Ahnaf bin Qais was reading the Koran. The verse he read was:
{لَقَدْ أَنزَلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ كِتَاباً فِيهِ ذِكْرُكُمْ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ} [الأنبياء:10]
"Indeed We have sent down to you a book in which there is mention of you. Do you not think?"
Ahnaf said to himself, "I will look for myself in the Koran. I want to know who I am and who I look like."
He read verse by verse. He met with the following verse:
{الَّذِينَ يُنْفِقُونَ فِي السَّرَّاءِ وَالضَّرَّاءِ وَالْكَاظِمِينَ الْغَيْظَ وَالْعَافِينَ عَنِ النَّاسِ وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ} [آل عمران::134]
"Those who spend in good and bad times, restrain their emotions and forgive people. Allah loves those who do good."
He said to himself, "I am not here."
He read again and found this verse:
{وَيُؤْثِرُونَ عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَلَوْ كَانَ ب above
"They put others before themselves even though they themselves need it. Whoever keeps himself from being miserly then they are the lucky ones."
He said to himself, "I am not here."
He read again and found this verse:
{كَانُوا قَلِيلًا مِنَ اللَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ (17) وَبِالْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ (18) وَفِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ لِلسَّائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ (199)} [الذاريات]
"They sleep very little at night. At dawn they make istighfar. In their property there is a right for those who beg and those who maintain their dignity."
He said to himself, "I'm not here."
He kept looking. He then found the following verse:
{إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ} [الصافات:35]
"When it is said to them, there is no god but Allah, they are arrogant."
He said to himself, "I'm not here and I'm getting away from them."
Then he read again and found the following verse:
{مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِي سَقَرَ (42) قَالُوا لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ الْمُصَلِّينَ (43) وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ الْمِسْكِينَ (44) وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ الْخَائِضِينَ (45) وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ (46)} [المدثر]
"What caused you to go to hell? They said, "We did not pray before. We also don't feed the poor. We share in evil with those who do it. We also deny the day after."
He said to himself, "I'm not here and I'm getting away from them."
Until finally he found the following verse:
{وَآخَرُونَ اعْتَرَفُوا بِذُنُوبِهِمْ خَلَطُوا عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَآخَرَ سَيِّئًا عَسَى اللَّهُ أَنْ يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ} [التوبة:102]
"Those who confess their sins. They mix good deeds and bad deeds. May Allah forgive them. Verily Allah is Forgiving, Most Merciful."
He said, "Here I am."

Mari Menemukan Diri Dalam al Quran
Suatu ketika Ahnaf bin Qais membaca al Quran. Ayat yang dibacanya adalah:
{لَقَدْ أَنزَلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ كِتَاباً فِيهِ ذِكْرُكُمْ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ} [الأنبياء:10]
"Sungguh telah Kami turunkan padamu sebuah kitab yang di dalamnya ada penyebutan tentangmu. Apakah kamu tidak berpikir?"
Ahnaf berkata pada dirinya, "Aku akan mencari diriku dalam al Quran. Aku ingin tahu siapa diriku dan dengan siapa aku mirip."
Ia baca ayat demi ayat. Ia bertemu dengan ayat berikut:
{الَّذِينَ يُنْفِقُونَ فِي السَّرَّاءِ وَالضَّرَّاءِ وَالْكَاظِمِينَ الْغَيْظَ وَالْعَافِينَ عَنِ النَّاسِ وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ} [آل عمران::134]
"Orang-orang yang berinfak di waktu senang dan susah, menahan emosi dan memaafkan manusia. Allah mencintai orang-orang yang berbuat baik."
Ia berkata dalam dirinya, "Aku tidak ada di sini."
Ia membaca lagi dan menemukan ayat ini:
{وَيُؤْثِرُونَ عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَلَوْ كَانَ بِهِمْ خَصَاصَةٌ وَمَنْ يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهِ فَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ} [الحشر::9]
"Mereka mendahulukan orang lain dari diri mereka meskipun mereka sendiri membutuhkan. Siapa yang menjaga dirinya dari sifat kikir maka mereka itulah orang-orang yang beruntung."
Ia berkata dalam dirinya, "Aku tidak ada di sini."
Ia membaca lagi lalu menemukan ayat ini:
{كَانُوا قَلِيلًا مِنَ اللَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ (17) وَبِالْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ (18) وَفِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ لِلسَّائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ (199)} [الذاريات]
"Mereka sedikit sekali tidur di malam hari. Di waktu sahur mereka beristighfar. Dalam harta mereka ada hak untuk orang yang meminta-minta dan orang yang menjaga harga dirinya."
Ia pun berkata dalam dirinya, "Aku tidak ada di sini."
Ia terus mencari. Ia lalu menemukan ayat berikut:
{إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ} [الصافات:35]
"Ketika dikatakan pada mereka, tidak ada Tuhan selain Allah, mereka bersikap sombong."
Ia berkata pada dirinya, "Aku tidak ada disini dan aku berlepas diri dari mereka."
Kemudian ia membaca lagi dan menemukan ayat berikut:
{مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِي سَقَرَ (42) قَالُوا لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ الْمُصَلِّينَ (43) وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ الْمِسْكِينَ (44) وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ الْخَائِضِينَ (45) وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ (46)} [المدثر]
"Apa yang menyebabkan kalian masuk neraka? Mereka menjawab, " Kami dulu tidak shalat. Kami juga tidak memberi makan orang miskin. Kami ikut melakukan keburukan bersama orang-orang yang melakukannya. Kami juga mendustakan hari kemudian."
Ia berkata pada dirinya, "Aku tidak ada disini dan aku berlepas diri dari mereka."
Sampai akhirnya ia menemukan ayat berikut:
{وَآخَرُونَ اعْتَرَفُوا بِذُنُوبِهِمْ خَلَطُوا عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَآخَرَ سَيِّئًا عَسَى اللَّهُ أَنْ يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ} [التوبة:102]
"Orang-orang yang mengakui dosa-dosa mereka. Mereka mencampurkan amal yang baik dan amal yang buruk. Semoga Allah mengampuni mereka. Sesungguhnya Allah Maha Pengampun lagi Maha Penyayang."
Ia pun berkata, "Disinilah diriku."
