"The bad (haram sustenance) is not the same as the good (halal sustenance) even though the abundance of the bad attracts your heart, so fear Allah, O people of understanding, so that you may gain good luck."
(QS Al Maidah: 100)
– Every Muslim certainly wants blessed sustenance. However, many people still doubt whether the good fortune they receive is a blessing or not. In fact, there are quite a lot of indications that can show whether our fortune is a blessing or not. Here are some signs when sustenance is not a blessing:
1. Only Useful for the Worldly
Fortune that is not blessed can be seen from how it is used. If the fortune is only used to add furniture to the house, add to your collection of clothes, shoes, cars, or eat at a fancy restaurant, but it is very difficult to spend it to give alms, give waqf, or simply please your parents, then the fortune is not a blessing.
Blessings of good fortune will be easily spent to help family, relatives, people who are in trouble, as well as for other investments in the afterlife. Therefore, if you want to get blessings, make it easy to share.
“And spend some of what We have given you before death comes to one of you; then he said: 'O my Lord, why don't you postpone (death) me until a near future, so that I can give charity and I am amongpious people?’.” (QS Al Munafiqun: 10)
2. Distance yourself from God
Another sign of sustenance that is not blessed is if the sustenance makes us complacent and further away from Allah. For example, someone who owns a luxury car, if the presence of the car makes him busy maintaining the car, gathering with a community of similar luxury car owners, and feeling arrogant, then it is certain that the car will not bring blessings.
On the other hand, if the luxury car makes us more grateful, worship Allah more often, and do not hesitate to help people who need help, then that is a sign that the car brings blessings.
“O you who believe, let not your wealth and your children distract you from remembering Allah. Whoever does this, they are the ones who lose." (QS Al Munafiqun: 9)
3. Useful for yourself
The next sign of fortune that is not a blessing is when the fortune is only used for personal gain. Even though the amount is not large and may only be enough for daily needs, if the fortune is a blessing, it will still bring benefits to other people around it.
However, if the amount of good fortune is large but is only used for personal interests, such as for a luxurious lifestyle, this is something you should be wary of. Especially if there are many families or neighbors around who need financial assistance, this becomes even more important to pay attention to.
4. Always Less
There are people who always feel deprived even though they get whatever amount of good fortune they have. This could be caused by poor money management, or indeed because the fortune received is not a blessing.
Blessed sustenance is usually enough to meet needs even though the amount is not large. If you always feel lacking even though you are getting good fortune, it is important to introspect on how you manage your finances.
However, if you have been very careful in managing your finances but still feel inadequate, it may be necessary to increase the amount of alms given.
Do not reduce the amount of alms that is usually given, because perhaps Allah SWT tests our trust and trust by giving us trials of shortages.
