- One of the popular platforms for buying and selling transactions online is Facebook Marketplace. This platform allows users to connect with buyers or sellers and send messages directly to them.
However, Keeper Security has revealed that behind the app's success lies a significant risk of fraud. "Even though Facebook Marketplace offers convenience in searching for items at discounted prices, we have to be very careful as buyers and sellers," said an expert from Keeper Security as reported by The Sun, Sunday (11/2/2024).
There are three types of fraud that are often found on Facebook Marketplace. First, buyers will find popular products at low prices, even though the products are not actually for sale.
Once the seller has succeeded in luring the victim into buying the product and making payment, they will say the product is no longer available, then offer a similar product as a replacement at a higher price or lower quality.
The second common scam involves deposits. This scheme is usually applied when sellers list very expensive products.
Scammers will usually ask you to put down a deposit to guarantee that you will actually buy the item. However, never do this before you meet the seller. The third type of fraud to watch out for is the use of gift cards. For this fraud mode, you will be asked to pay using a gift card, not a trusted payment method.
You will be asked to load the gift card with cash equivalent to the selling price of the item. You will then be asked to submit the gift card number before the item can be shipped. This is very dangerous and makes you very vulnerable. This case often occurs in England.
Therefore, when shopping on Facebook Marketplace, make sure to stick to secure payment methods, check reviews, and arrange to meet in a public place to check out items in person. Apart from that, it is also recommended to continue using the Facebook Messenger feature to communicate with sellers.

"Meskipun Facebook Marketplace menawarkan kemudahan dalam mencari barang dengan harga diskon, kita harus sangat berhati-hati sebagai pembeli maupun penjual," kata ahli dari Keeper Security dilansir dari The Sun, Minggu (11/2/2024).
Terdapat tiga jenis penipuan yang sering ditemukan di Faceboook Marketlace. Pertama, pembeli akan menemukan produk populer dengan harga murah, padahal produk tersebut sebenarnya tidak dijual.
Setelah penjual berhasil memikat korban agar membeli produk tersebut dan melakukan pembayaran, mereka akan mengatakan produk tersebut tidak tersedia lagi, lalu menawarkan produk serupa sebagai pengganti dengan harga lebih tinggi atau kualitas lebih rendah.
Penipuan umum kedua melibatkan deposito. Skema ini biasanya diterapkan ketika penjual mencantumkan produk yang sangat mahal. Penipu biasanya akan meminta Anda memberikan deposit untuk menjamin bahwa Anda benar-benar akan membeli barang tersebut. Namun, jangan pernah melakukan hal ini sebelum Anda bertemu dengan penjual.
Jenis penipuan ketiga yang harus diwaspadai adalah penggunaan kartu hadiah. Untuk modus penipuan ini, Anda akan diminta membayar menggunakan kartu hadiah, bukan metode pembayaran tepercaya.
Anda akan diminta untuk mengisi kartu hadiah dengan uang tunai yang setara dengan harga jual barang tersebut. Kemudian Anda akan diminta untuk mengirimkan nomor kartu hadiah sebelum barang dapat dikirim. Ini sangat berbahaya dan membuat Anda sangat rentan. Kasus ini banyak terjadi di Inggris.
Karenanya, saat berbelanja di Facebook Marketplace, pastikan untuk tetap menggunakan metode pembayaran yang aman, memeriksa ulasan, dan mengatur pertemuan di tempat umum untuk memeriksa barang secara langsung.
