The majority of scholars from the Syaf'i, Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali schools of thought emphasize that the number of tarawih prayers is 20 rak'ahs.
فَإِنَّهَا عِشْرُونَ رَكْعَةً سِوَى الْوِتْرِ عِنْدِنَا
Meaning: "So actually the tarawih prayer is 20 rak'ahs, apart from the witir, in our opinion," (Imam As-Sarakhsi from the Hanafi school in the book As-Saraksi, Al Mabsuth).
Imam Ad-Dardiri from the Maliki School also said the same thing
وَالتَّرَاوِيْحُ بِرَمَضَانَ وَهِيَ عِشْرُوْنَ رَكْعَةً بَعْدَ ص God bless you عِ وَالْوِتْرِ
Meaning: "And the Taarawih prayer in the month of Ramadhan is 20 rak'ahs after Isha with greetings every two rak'ahs, outside of intercession and witr," written in the book Ad-Dardiri, Asy-Syarhu Ash-Shagir.
The law of tarawih is 36 rakaat
Some Maliki school scholars explain that the tarawih prayer consists of 36 raka'at as follows.
وَكَانَ السَّلَفُ الصَّالِحُ يَقُومُونَ فِيهِ فِي الْمَسَاجِدِ بِ عِشْرِينَ رَكْعَةً... ثُمَّ صَلَّوْا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ سِتًّا وَثَلَاثِي نَ رَكْعَةً... وَهَذَا اخْتَارَهُ مَالِكٌ فِي الْمُدَوَّنَةِ وَاسْتَح ْسَنَهُ
Meaning: "And Salaf scholars carry out tarawih prayers in the month of Ramadan with 20 rak'ahs... then after that they pray with 36 rak'ahs," Imam An-Nafrawi.
The law of tarawih is 8 rakat
Some scholars of the Hanafi school, such as Imam Al-Akmal Ibnu al-Humam, stated that the Messenger of Allah performed tarawih for 8 rak'ahs.

Perbedaan tersebut salah satunya diriwayatkan oleh Bukhari dan Muslim berikut.
“Shalat malam itu dua rakaat–dua rakaat. Jika salah seorang di antara kalian takut masuk subuh, kerjakanlah satu rakaat. Dengan itu berarti kalian menutup sholat dengan witir,” (HR. Bukhari No.990 dan Muslim No.749, dari Ibnu ‘Umar).
Hukum tarawih 20 rakaat
Mayoritas ulama dari mazhab Syaf’i, Hanafi, Maliki, dan Hanbali menegaskan bahwa jumlah sholat tarawih adalah 20 rakaat.
فَإِنَّهَا عِشْرُونَ رَكْعَةً سِوَى الْوِتْرِ عِنْدِنَا
Artinya: “Maka sesungguhnya sholat tarawih itu 20 rakaat, selain witir, menurut pendapat kami,” (Imam As-Sarakhsi dari mazhab Hanafi dalam kitab As-Saraksi, Al Mabsuth).
Hal serupa juga disampaikan oleh Imam Ad-Dardiri dari Mazhab Maliki
وَالتَّرَاوِيْحُ بِرَمَضَانَ وَهِيَ عِشْرُوْنَ رَكْعَةً بَعْدَ صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ يُسَلِّمُ مِنْ كُلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ غَيْرِ الشَّفْعِ وَالْوِتْرِ
Artinya: “Dan sholat Taarawih di bulan Ramadhan yaitu 20 rakaat setelah Isya dengan salam tiap dua rakaat, di luar syafa’ dan witir,” tertulis dalam kitab Ad-Dardiri, Asy-Syarhu Ash-Shagir.
Hukum tarawih 36 rakaat
Sebagian ulama mazhab Maliki menjelaskan bahwa sholat tarawih terdiri dari 36 raka’at seperti berikut.
وَكَانَ السَّلَفُ الصَّالِحُ يَقُومُونَ فِيهِ فِي الْمَسَاجِدِ بِعِشْرِينَ رَكْعَةً... ثُمَّ صَلَّوْا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ سِتًّا وَثَلَاثِينَ رَكْعَةً... وَهَذَا اخْتَارَهُ مَالِكٌ فِي الْمُدَوَّنَةِ وَاسْتَحْسَنَهُ
Artinya: “Dan ulama salaf melaksanakan sholat tarawih di bulan Ramadhan di masih dengan 20 rakaat…lalu setelah itu mereka sholat dengan 36 rakaat,” Imam An-Nafrawi.
Hukum tarawih 8 rakaat
Sebagian ulama mazhab Hanafi, seperti Imam Al-Akmal Ibnu al-Humam menyatakan bahwa Rasulullah menjalankan tarawih sebanyak 8 rakaat.
أَنَّ قِيَامَ رَمَضَانَ سُنَّةٌ إحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً بِالْوِتْرِ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ فَعَلَهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ تَرَكَهُ لِعُذْرٍ... وَظَاهِرُ كَلَامِ الْمَشَايِخِ أَنَّ السُّنَّةَ عِشْرُونَ، وَمُقْتَضَى الدَّلِيلِ مَا قُلْنَا
Artinya: “Sesungguhnya Qiyamul Lail di Bulan Ramadhan hukumnya sunnah yaitu 11 rakaat dengan witir, secara berjamaah. Ini dikerjakan oleh Rasulullah SAW lalu ditinggalkannya karena ada uzur… Zahir pendapat masyayikh bahwa sunnahnya 20 rakaat. Sedangkan menurut dalil apa yang kami katakan (8 rakaat tanpa witir),” Ujar Imam Al-Kamal Ibnu al-Humam dalam kitab Fathul Qadir.
