Microsoft Boss Blames Apple for Making Google King of Internet
SPIRITUAL CHAT - Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella accused the search engine agreement between Apple and Google of making it impossible for other search engines such as Bing to compete. With Google being the default search engine in Safari on all Apple devices, people have become accustomed to using it.
"You wake up in the morning, brush your teeth, and do a Google search," Nadella said while testifying in Google v. US Department of Justice.
According to him, at such a level of habit formation, the only way to change is to change the standards. Currently Google can use up to 90% of its market share to improve search results, thus further strengthening its monopoly. On the other hand there is no choice in the search market.
Microsoft is trying to take market share from Google by adding OpenAI chatbot technology to Bing, but Nadella said it's unclear how much AI can reshape the market now given Google's distribution advantage.
Meanwhile, Apple's Chief AI Officer John Giannandrea heads the search engine development team. According to a report by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the team has created a next-generation search engine for Apple applications.
Codenamed 'Pegasus", this search technology can provide more accurate results. Although it is already used in several Apple applications, Apple will expand it to additional applications, such as the App Store.
What Apple has now doesn't compare to Google's search engine, but Gurman thinks Apple could use it as the backbone of a full search engine in the future.
