Al Qaeda Urges Muslims to Avoid the Qatar World Cup, What's Up?

Al Qaeda's regional offshoot is urging Muslims around the world to avoid the Qatar World Cup football, a statement was reported by a monitoring group.

The statement from the hardline group was issued without any explanation or warning of threats of attack or violence in connection with the event.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the Yemen-based offshoot of the militant group, criticized Qatar for "bringing immoral people, homosexuals, sowers of corruption and atheism to the Arabian Peninsula."

They said the event served to divert attention from the "occupation of Muslim countries" and their oppression.

“We warn our Muslim brothers not to join or attend this event,” said the statement, reported by Intelligence group SITE on Saturday (19/11/2022), a day before the tournament opened in the Muslim-majority country for the first time.

Organizers of the 2022 World Cup Qatar have responded to criticism of Qatar's human rights record including LGBT rights as well as social restrictions.

However, they say that everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or background, is welcome during the event.

Qatar is a small country of about 3 million, where most of the workers are foreigners.

The country says it has trained more than 50,000 people to provide security during the World Cup, with foreign troops assisting under Qatari command.
