- Christmas Eve 1968, the Apollo 8 crew captured a spectacular scene as they orbited the Moon, in which the illuminated Earth appeared above the barren Moon's horizon. The NASA astronauts were amazed by what they saw.
"Oh my God, look at the picture there! There's the Earth appearing. Wow, it's so beautiful!" Bill Anders shouted at fellow astronaut Jim Lovell, quoted by detikINET from the BBC.
“That was a beautiful shot,” Lovell said as Anders clicked the button and captured what has become one of the world's most famous photos.

The image was named Earthrise, the first color photo of Earth taken from space and quickly circulated throughout the world. This photo is widely credited with encouraging the global environmental movement and the creation of Earth Day, an annual event promoting environmental awareness, in 1970.
More than 50 years after it was taken, Earthrise continues to be viewed as one of the most iconic photos ever taken. "This is a perfect picture," said Michael Pritchard, director of programs at the Royal Photographic Society in England.
"It is a beautiful, high-resolution, color image that is very well reproducible and provides a never-before-seen perspective of the Earth," he added.
"This clearly shows Earth from space, but also puts it in a context we've never seen before. This shows that Earth is a very vulnerable region in space," he continued.
In the late 1960s, voices for caring for the Earth became increasingly widespread. The environmental groups Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace were founded in 1969 and 1971 respectively. The US government established the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970.
Eighteen months after the Apollo 8 astronauts photographed Earthrise, 20 million people took to the streets across America to protest environmental destruction on the first Earth Day. Kathleen Rogers, president of the Earth Day Network, said Earthrise photos play an important role in encouraging people to take part in environmental activism.
"This gave rise to Earth Day, now attended by one billion people, and created a worldwide environmental movement. After the photo was published, members of Congress and global leaders started talking about how fragile the Earth is. "Earthrise highlighted Earth's uniqueness in the big black universe and it made millions of people aware of how dirty our planet is," Rogers said.

Malam Natal tahun 1968, kru Apollo 8 menjepret pemandangan spektakuler saat mereka mengorbit Bulan, yaitu Bumi diterangi cahaya muncul di atas cakrawala Bulan yang tandus. Para astronot NASA itu pun terpesona dengan apa yang mereka lihat.
"Ya Tuhan, lihat gambar di sana! Ada Bumi yang muncul. Wow, cantik sekali!" Bill Anders berteriak pada sesama astronot Jim Lovell, dikutip detikINET dari BBC.
"Itu adalah bidikan yang indah," kata Lovell ketika Anders mengklik tombol dan menangkap apa yang menjadi salah satu foto paling terkenal di dunia.

Gambar itu diberi nama Earthrise, foto berwarna Bumi pertama yang diambil dari luar angkasa dan dengan cepat beredar ke seluruh dunia. Foto ini secara luas dianggap mendorong gerakan lingkungan global dan penciptaan Hari Bumi, acara tahunan yang mempromosikan kesadaran lingkungan, pada tahun 1970.

Kathleen Rogers, presiden Earth Day Network, mengatakan foto Earthrise memainkan peran penting mendorong orang ambil bagian dalam aktivisme lingkungan.
