Proton Offers Free VPN for Censorship-Hobby Citizens

Internet privacy COMPANY Proton will offer a network of free VPN servers for use in many countries holding elections this year. Target countries especially those with a history of censorship and repression.
Switzerland-based Proton says its goal is to help local communities circumvent government censorship. This also prevents interference or misinformation during election campaigns.
In a year when about half the global population will go to the polls, Proton says it is critical to provide widespread access to virtual private network services that can be used to circumvent internet censorship and access information freely. Venezuela, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, and Turkey are among the countries where the company says it will provide its free servers.
"2024 will be full of challenges for democracy around the world," said Proton chairman Andy Yen in a statement, Wednesday (7/3). "Many countries that hold elections have a dubious track record in terms of freedom of expression and free electoral processes," he said.
"Protecting free speech and fighting censorship is a core part of our mission and we are committed to doing what we can to help voters around the world exercise their basic rights."
Proton, also known for its encrypted email service, said that for two weeks before and after key elections, it will offer free local servers to users who appear to be logging in from countries where voting is taking place. The technical implementation will vary depending on the circumstances in the country.
They show that they can use smart routing technology that allows them to offer VPN servers in countries where they cannot have a physical presence. The servers are located in nearby locations but still have the ability to bypass government censorship.
"This means local users will be able to access free, unfiltered internet at high speeds without the servers being overloaded by users from all over the world," Proton said. The company says that tracking requests for its VPN services is a way of early detection of government crackdowns and attacks on free speech.
Proton said there had been a big surge in demand in a number of places over the last 12 months. It saw an increase in demand of 4,700% in Nepal, 6,000% in Pakistan, 25,000% in Gabon and 100,000% in Senegal. "All of this is in response to political or civil unrest," he said. (AFP/Z-2)

Proton yang berbasis di Swiss mengatakan tujuannya membantu masyarakat lokal menghindari sensor pemerintah. Ini sekaligus mencegah campur tangan atau informasi yang salah selama kampanye pemilu.
Pada tahun ketika sekitar separuh populasi global akan pergi ke tempat pemungutan suara, Proton mengatakan sangat penting untuk menyediakan akses luas terhadap layanan jaringan pribadi virtual yang dapat digunakan untuk menghindari sensor internet dan mengakses informasi secara bebas. Venezuela, Sudan Selatan, Sri Lanka, dan Turki termasuk negara yang menurut perusahaan akan menyediakan server gratisnya.

Proton, yang juga dikenal dengan layanan email terenkripsinya, mengatakan bahwa selama dua minggu sebelum dan sesudah pemilu penting, pihaknya akan menawarkan server lokal gratis kepada pengguna yang tampaknya masuk dari negara tempat pemungutan suara berlangsung. Implementasi teknisnya akan bervariasi tergantung pada keadaan di negara tersebut.
Mereka menunjukkan bahwa mereka dapat menggunakan teknologi perutean cerdas yang memungkinkannya menawarkan server VPN di negara-negara tempat mereka tidak dapat hadir secara fisik. Server-server tersebut berlokasi di lokasi terdekat tetapi masih memiliki kemampuan untuk melewati sensor pemerintah.

Pihaknya melihat kenaikan permintaan sebesar 4.700% di Nepal, 6.000% di Pakistan, 25.000% di Gabon, dan 100.000% di Senegal.
