Google Changes Policy, Now It's Easier to Delete Application Data and Accounts in the Play Store
- The Google Play Store application store now makes it easier for users who want to delete their account on an application.
Google changes account deletion mechanism. Users can now ask the application developer directly to delete their account and data. In this way, user data in unused applications will be safer.
This feature is presented in Google Play Store version v39.7 which was released on Monday (12/2/2024). "You can now request data and account deletion from the App Details page by clicking a link directed to the developer's site," the update description reads.
This feature is actually not that new, because Google announced it to developers last year.
At that time, Google asked application developers who required account creation to allow users to delete data and accounts either via the application or the developer's website. Last year, Google also shared an overview of the mechanism for the account deletion feature. So, there will be a link to the developer's website in the details of an app in the Play Store.

According to KompasTekno monitoring, this feature is not yet available in Indonesia. So, Android cellphone users in Indonesia cannot yet request data deletion from the developer directly from the Play Store.
Google Play Store actually states that users can request data deletion in applications to the developer. This information is listed in the Data Safety menu. However, links or access to the developer are not available directly. By including a link to the developer's website, users can later request data and account deletion more easily.
Tighten developer requirements
In addition to asking developers to allow users to completely delete accounts and data, Google is also tightening developer requirements for app releases on the Play Store. The goal is to cut low-quality and unsafe applications for consumers.
At the beginning of 2023, all developers were asked to fulfill verification requirements to publish applications on the Play Store. Then in November 2023, Google again asks developers to test the application on at least 20 people for two weeks, before moving on to the production/development stage.
"This allows developers to identify problems, get input (feedback), and ensure everything is ready before the application is released," wrote Google on the official Android Developers Blog page, in 2023. Through the new policy, the technology giant also plans to invest more in its application review process.
Because, summarized by KompasTekno from Tech Crunch, Thursday (15/2/2024), applications available on the Google Play Store are considered to have less stringent security than Apple's App Store.
Therefore, Google revealed that the team in charge of reviewing applications before they are released on the Play Store will also spend more time assessing new applications.
This assessment includes whether the application to be released is appropriate and meets applicable policies, and does not deceive users, both inside and outside the Play Store.

"Sekarang Anda bisa meminta penghapusan data dan akun dari halaman App Details dengan mengeklik sebuah tautan yang diarahkan ke situs pengembang," bunyi deksripsi pembaruan tersebut.
Fitur ini sebenarnya tidak begitu baru, karena sudah diumumkan Google ke pengembang pada tahun lalu. Saat itu, Google meminta pengembang aplikasi yang mensyaratkan pembuatan akun, agar mengizinkan pengguna nenghapus data dan akun baik lewat aplikasi maupun situs web pengembang.
Tahun lalu, Google juga membagikan gambaran mekanisme fitur penghapusan akun itu. Jadi, akan tersedia tautan menuju ke situs web pengembang di rincian sebuah aplikasi di Play Store.

Pantauan KompasTekno, fitur ini belum tersedia di Indonesia. Jadi, pengguna ponsel Android di Indonesia belum bisa mengajukan penghapusan data ke pengembang langsung dari Play Store. Google Play Store sebenarnya menyatakan bahwa pengguna bisa mengajukan penghapusan data di aplikasi ke pengembang. Keterangan itu tercantum dalam menu Data Safety. Hanya saja, tautan atau akses ke pengembang tidak tersedia langsung.
Dengan mencantumkan tautan ke situs web pengembang, pengguna nantinya bisa mengajukan penghapusan data maupun akun secara lebih mudah.
Perketat syarat pengembang
Selain meminta pengembang mengizinkan pengguna menghapus akun dan data sepenuhnya, Google juga memperketat syarat pengembang untuk rilis aplikasi di Play Store. Tujuannya untuk memangkas aplikasi berkualitas rendah dan tidak aman bagi konsumen.
Pada awal tahun 2023 lalu, seluruh pengembang diminta memenuhi persyaratan verifikasi untuk menerbitkan aplikasi di Play Store. Kemudian November 2023, Google kembali meminta pengembang menguji aplikasi setidaknya ke 20 orang selama dua minggu, sebelum lanjut ke tahap produksi/pengembangan.
“Hal ini memungkinkan pengembang mengidentifikasi masalah, mendapatkan masukan (feedback), dan memastikan semuanya sudah siap sebelum aplikasi dirilis,” tulis Google di laman resmi Android Developers Blog, pada 2023 lalu.
Lewat kebijakan baru, raksasa teknologi ini juga berencana berinvestasi lebih banyak soal proses peninjauan aplikasinya.
Sebab, dirangkum KompasTekno dari Tech Crunch, Kamis (15/2/2024), aplikasi yang tersedia di Google Play Store dinilai memiliki keamanan yang kurang ketat dibandingkan App Store milik Apple.
Maka dari itu, Google mengungkapkan bahwa tim yang bertugas meninjau aplikasi sebelum dirilis di Play Store juga akan menghabiskan waktu lebih banyak lagi dalam memberi penilaian terhadap aplikasi baru.
Penilaian tersebut mencakup apakah aplikasi yang akan dirilis sudah sesuai dan memenuhi kebijakan yang berlaku, serta tidak menipu pengguna, baik di dalam maupun di luar Play Store.
