Collaborating with the FBI to Find the Perpetrators of Hacking SEC Accounts on Social Media

- The official social media account of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was the victim of hacking on Tuesday, January 9 2024. Hackers spread false information about the approval of spot-based bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) products.
This false information has caused a stir in the crypto market, which is awaiting the SEC's decision regarding the application of spot bitcoin ETFs from several companies. The SEC and FBI are currently investigating this incident, which has also received scrutiny from US lawmakers.
This false information appeared on the SEC's social media account at around 16.00 US eastern time, and immediately spread widely among the account's followers.
The false information claims that the SEC has approved several spot bitcoin ETFs for listing on US stock exchanges. In fact, the SEC has not yet issued an official decision regarding this matter, and is expected to do so on the same day or a few days later.
SEC Chairman Gary Gensler immediately responded to the false information via his personal account, and confirmed that no spot bitcoin ETF approval had been granted by the SEC. He also appealed to the public not to believe information that does not come from official SEC sources, namely the SEC website and the Federal Register.
SEC spokesperson John Nester confirmed that the SEC's social media accounts had been hacked, and that the SEC was working with law enforcement, including the SEC's Office of Inspector General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), to investigate this incident. He also assured that the SEC will provide appropriate updates regarding the progress of the investigation and official actions regarding spot bitcoin ETFs.
US Parliamentary Reaction
This hacking of SEC social media accounts raised concerns among US lawmakers, who questioned the digital security measures taken by the SEC. They also urged the SEC to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident, and provide a transparent explanation to the public.
Among those criticizing the SEC was Representative French Hill, who called the incident a "significant technological vulnerability" in Washington, and a "low point" for the SEC. He, along with the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Patrick McHenry, and other members, plans to send a letter to Gensler, demanding an explanation and accountability from the SEC regarding this hack.
Senator Cynthia Lummis also criticized the SEC, and highlighted the potential negative impact such false information could have on the crypto market. He urged Gensler to provide clarification and assurances to crypto investors, and to speed up the spot bitcoin ETF approval process, which is considered an important step to increase legitimacy and oversight of the crypto industry.
