The story of a Madurese scrap metal entrepreneur who intends to buy junk from Iraq (Hops.ID/Wikipedia)
Hops.ID - It's no longer a secret that the scrap metal business has long been controlled by Madurese, especially those overseas.
The scrap metal and junk goods business is indeed a business that is identical and attached to the Madurese.
It is not uncommon for Madurese to run a scrap metal business that has been passed down from their parents.
Bittersweet stories about the scrap metal business are always present in the journey of a Madurese businessman who tries to make money from junk.
From misjudging the price to failing to buy a shipwreck, these are just a few of their many stories.
One of the stories that once existed was looking for scrap metal all the way to Iraq because of the desire to make a profit.
"During the Iraq war several years ago, I sent 3 of my men to Iraq," said Haji Mustofa, a 57-year-old Madurese man, as quoted by Hops.ID, Saturday, July 15, 2023.
It was not without reason that Haji Mustofa was tempted by scrap metal in Negeri 1001 Malam at that time.
"Because I saw after the attack by American troops in Iraq, many buildings were damaged, towers collapsed, so I was interested," said this scrap metal skipper in Surabaya, who has been in business for decades.
What can be said that his great desire was not realized because it was not as easy as he thought.
"I canceled it even though at that time I had prepared a large enough fund to buy scrap metal from Iraq," he said.
But at least according to Haji Mustofa he already has relations with the Iraqis even though he failed in the 'first mission'.
"At least I have established relationships with the people there, there must be benefits," he concluded.
Starting a scrap metal business at the age of 16, Haji Mustofa is now a respected Madurese in the city of Surabaya.***
