Golden advice from al Imam Shafi'i for today's students of religious knowledge:
ﻣﺎ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﻤﻘﺎﻡ ﻟـﺬﻱ ﻋﻘـ both
Smart, civilized people don't want to just sit idly by in their hometown...
ﻓـﺪﻉ ﺍﻷﻭﻃـﺎﻥ ﻭﺍﻏﺘـﺮﺏ
Leave your country and wander far away to other people's lands....
ﺳﺎﻓﺮ ﺗﺠـﺪ ﻋﻮﺿـﺎً ﻋﻤـﻦ ﺗﻔﺎﺭﻗـﻪ
Go, then you will be replaced by the relatives and friends you left behind...
ﻭﺍﻧﺼﺐ ﻓﺈﻥ ﻟﺬﻳﺬ ﺍﻟﻌﻴﺶ ﻓﻲﺍﻟﻨﺼـﺐ
Be tired, because the sweetness of life is felt after being tired of fighting...
ﺇﻧﻲ ﺭﺃﻳـﺖ ﻭﻗـﻮﻑ ﺍﻟﻤـﺎﺀ ﻳﻔﺴـﺪﻩ
I saw the stagnant water become corrupted by being held still...
ﺇﻥ ﺳﺎل ﻃﺎﺏ ﻭﺇﻥ ﻟﻢ ﻳﺠﺮ ﻟﻢ ﻳﻄـﺐ
If it has flowed it will become clear otherwise it will remain cloudy and seedy...
ﻭﺍﻷﺳﺪ ﻟﻮﻻ ﻓﺮﺍﻕ ﺍﻷﺭﺽ ﻣﺎ ﺍﻓﺘﺮﺳﺖ
The lion will not get prey, if he is reluctant to leave the nest...
ﻭﺍﻟﺴﻬﻢ ﻟﻮﻻ ﻓﺮﺍﻕ ﺍﻟﻘﻮﺱ ﻟﻢ ﻳﺼـﺐ
An arrow if it doesn't fly from the bow will never hit its target....
والترب كالترب ملقى في أماكنه
God bless you
Gold ore is like a stone without value in its place of origin. Likewise, gaharu in the wilderness is just a piece of wood, no different from any other tree.....
إن تغرب هذا عزّ مطلبه
وإن تغرّب ذاك عز كالذّهب
It was only when the agarwood was taken out that it was a high-value perfume. And when the ore leaves its place, it becomes precious gold.
MERANTAULAH UNTUK ILMU

Nasehat emas dari al imam Syafi'i untuk para penuntut ilmu agama hari ini :
ﻣﺎ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﻤﻘﺎﻡ ﻟـﺬﻱ ﻋﻘـﻞٍ ﻭﺫﻱ ﺃﺩﺏٍ ﻣﻦ ﺭﺍﺣﺔ
Orang pandai lagi beradab tak akan mau hanya diam berpangku tangan di kampung halaman...
ﻓـﺪﻉ ﺍﻷﻭﻃـﺎﻥ ﻭﺍﻏﺘـﺮﺏ
Tinggalkanlah negerimu dan merantaulah jauh ke negeri orang....
ﺳﺎﻓﺮ ﺗﺠـﺪ ﻋﻮﺿـﺎً ﻋﻤـﻦ ﺗﻔﺎﺭﻗـﻪ
Pergilah, maka engkau akan diberi ganti dari kerabat dan sahabat yang engkau tinggalkan...
ﻭﺍﻧﺼﺐ ﻓﺈﻥ ﻟﺬﻳﺬ ﺍﻟﻌﻴﺶ ﻓﻲﺍﻟﻨﺼـﺐ
Berlelah-lelahlah, karena manisnya hidup terasa setelah lelah dalam berjuang...
ﺇﻧﻲ ﺭﺃﻳـﺖ ﻭﻗـﻮﻑ ﺍﻟﻤـﺎﺀ ﻳﻔﺴـﺪﻩ
Aku melihat air yang tergenang menjadi rusak karena diam tertahan...
ﺇﻥ ﺳﺎل ﻃﺎﺏ ﻭﺇﻥ ﻟﻢ ﻳﺠﺮ ﻟﻢ ﻳﻄـﺐ
Jika telah mengalir maka akan menjadi jernih jika tidak, dia akan tetap keruh dan kumuh...
ﻭﺍﻷﺳﺪ ﻟﻮﻻ ﻓﺮﺍﻕ ﺍﻷﺭﺽ ﻣﺎ ﺍﻓﺘﺮﺳﺖ
Singa tidak akan mendapatkan mangsa, jika ia enggan meninggalkan sarangnya...
ﻭﺍﻟﺴﻬﻢ ﻟﻮﻻ ﻓﺮﺍﻕ ﺍﻟﻘﻮﺱ ﻟﻢ ﻳﺼـﺐ
Anak panah jika tidak melesat dari busurnya tak akan pernah mengenai sasarannya....
والترب كالترب ملقى في أماكنه
والعودُ في أرضه نوعاً من الحطب
Bijih emas tak ubahnya kerikil tak bernilai di tempat asalnya. Demikian pula gaharu di hutan belantara hanya sebatang kayu, tak ada bedanya dengan pohon lainnya.....
إن تغرب هذا عزّ مطلبه
وإن تغرّب ذاك عز كالذّهب
Barulah ketika gaharu itu dibawa keluar, ia adalah parfum yang bernilai tinggi. Dan ketika bijih emas keluar dari tempatnya, ia menjadi emas yang berharga.
