European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visit the Canadian Forces Base (CFB)
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed on Tuesday their commitment to continue to support Ukraine in combating the Russian invasion of their country.
Speaking during a news conference at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Kingston in Ontario, Trudeau said Canada is extending engineering and medical training for Ukrainian forces and announced a budget for demining efforts and energy equipment for Ukraine's power grid.
EU's von der Leyen commended Canadian efforts in Ukraine and said the country has the necessary "grit and spirit" to win but needs weaponry support. Europe expects to train 30,000 troops by the end of 2023.
Trudeau and von der Leyen also addressed the world's over-dependency on Russian energy at the beginning of the war, while the Canadian PM confirmed his commitment to meet future energy needs worldwide.
Von der Leyen will visit the United States to try to lobby for a deal that allows European companies to benefit from IRA (Inflation Reduction Act) tax advantages for batteries and battery components. Like Canada, the EU is also aiming to bolster its own investments in the green transition. (Reuters)
